108
---
        Scale:  1/48
        Type:   Plastic, injection molded
        Kit #:  P402
        Mfgr:   Pegaso/Necomisa
        Remarks: Comparable to the Lindberg/Glenco SeaBee kit with opaque windows, it
                nonetheless is an excellent representation of a Stinson 108-3 (in spite
                of being mislabeled as a Stinson 105). With the usual amount of cleanup
                it could be made into a good desk model, and the more adventurous could
                fabricate transparent windows and detail the interior.  A plain but
                honest kit.  (Charmingly, it comes with a 1/100 scale hangar, runway
                and control tower printed on heavy paper.)

Notes
=====

1. Vacuform kits are generally considered "craftsman" kits because they require more effort than injection molded kits.  This is especially true of the early vacuforms which were formed over male molds and thus lack surface detail. ("Heroic effort" is sometimes required -- the L-1 kit is such an example.)  More recent vacuforms, especially from the former USSR, rival injection molded kits for detail, though they still require more care and effort to assemble.

2. Many of the plastic kits listed here are out of production.  Don't despair, however, as the hobby shops which cater to the serious modeller will often have discontinued kits in stock.  With the Baby Boomer population aging, I've noticed many kits from the 1960s have been reissued, so again take heart.

Modellers are a good source for discontinued kits, since they all buy more than they can possibly build in a lifetime and must periodically prune their collections.  (Motto: "A closetfull of unbuilt models is a closetfull of dreams.")  Find your local chapter of the IPMS (International Plastic Modeller's Society) and find when they're having a show.  The shows usually have a dealer's room where one can buy/sell/trade/haggle, etc. hard-to-find kits.  One can also post a request on the rec.models.scale newsgroup.  Finally, there's always eBay.
